Destin of SmarterEveryDay got to travel to the Arctic and board a US Navy nuclear submarine that had punched its conning tower up through the ice. This video is about the process of just going there. The actual footage of the submarine’s interior is being vetted by the Navy and will be in a second video.

Destin of SmarterEveryDay shares part of his military background with us: “My mission was to participate in a missile and torpedo engagement exercise at Pacific Missile Range Facility as part of RIMPAC 2018. RIMPAC (Rim of the Pacific Exercise) is the largest naval exercise in the world. It’s used to test interoperability and the ability to work as an international force.”

Destin of SmarterEveryDay graduated from Advanced Helo Underwater Egress Training at Marine Corps Base Hawaii, and went back for a refresher course in getting out of a sinking helicopter.

When airplanes crash on water, they tend to float on their wings and stay upright. Helicopters, on the other hand, are extremely top-heavy, so when they hit the water, they immediately flip over and sink like rocks. Training gets the crew over their profound disorientation and out safely.
