Vintage Banana Republic

Dating myself here, but I fondly remember the original Banana Republic store, before it became an upscale version of the GAP. The original store specialized in travel and safari clothing and accessories. If I had known it would be gone by the end of the eighties, I would have bought more stuff. Apparently, however, there is a Pinterest board following the old stuff.

All the storefronts had a safari-themed tableau including a Jeep “crashed” halfway through the glass.

This guy found a half-sawed-through Jeep from an old storefront. The SF Gate published a great love letter to the old BR, complete with lots of great photos.

I only got two items from them. First was a black cotton travel dress, which I still own and occasionally wear. It’s terribly comfortable, and I can dress it up or down. It looks similar to the ones in this image, but with a cowl neck instead of a turtleneck:

It still has its original label, though:

But my prize possession is this boiled-wool cape in military khaki green. It’s perfect for walks in the fog, cold, and wind. It’s got side slats for your arms to stick through as needed, and a hood, of course. Lined on top. Toasty warm. You can also kind of wrap the excess fabric around your body.

Here I am when I first got it, around age 17 or so. I think I paid about $80 for it.

It’s a number of years older by now. Still works like a charm.
