That’s right, this blog has been continuously running for ten years today.

We started out as a beta tester on Vox, from an invite from my wonderful friend Tim. When Vox died, many of us migrated over to WordPress.

I thank you all for checking in and commenting over the years. We’ve made some wonderful friends through this forum.

10 years

Here’s to another ten!

Package From Australia!

Santa (aka our beautiful Inga) came from the South Pole again this year, bringing goodies from Australia. We’ve been doing this “cultural exchange” bit for a couple/three years now. Collected the box from the post office yesterday, just in time for Christmas. Thanks, my dear!

???????????????????????????????

We have:

  • A jar of Mighty Mite, which is supposed to be like Vegemite but more friendly, with less of that sharp bite. Which reminds me of this video of American kids reacting to Vegemite: Their faces say it all. I’m proud to report that I have used up 3/4 of the tiny jar of Vegemite Inga sent before. I like it in grilled cheese sandwiches with tomato.
  • Two bags of Twisties, which are basically a subtler version of Cheetos, without that awful orange powder that coats your fingers. The bags poofed up so much I’m surprised they didn’t explode. Will have to open the second one over a bowl, because the bottom blew out when I tried to open the first one! 🙂
  • A big, decadent Whittaker’s chocolate bar from New Zealand. YUM.
  • Two sort of/kind of healthy-sounding snack bars by Emma & Tom’s. I bet they’ll be pretty decadent, too.
  • A Melbourne calendar full of gorgeous photos. What a beautiful city.
  • A silvery glitter bird to clamp onto anything I want to find glitter all over later. 🙂 Seriously, we have zero Christmas ornaments, so this is cool.
  • A handmade Christmas card that was so well done, I didn’t realize for a minute that it wasn’t store-bought. The puffy dragon sticker on the inside was my first clue.
  • An Official AFL (Australian Football League) beer coozy from the Collingwood Football Club. According to Inga, Collingwood fans are known for being “toothless, obnoxious bogans.” Which I LOVE, especially since their mascot is a magpie, but I would have guessed a raven. It’s got the official licensing tag on it, bristling with official licensing stickers, so I’m guessing that if AFL official gear is anything like NFL official gear, this is probably a $30 beer coozy we have here.

Thanks Inga! Merry Christmas! We’ll have to do this again next year.

2013 in Review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2013 annual report for this blog. I’m always surprised by the searches people use to find this blog. Apparently “facts about metals” is searched on an almost daily basis. At least the cartoon penises didn’t make the list this time! 🙂

Here’s an excerpt:

The concert hall at the Sydney Opera House holds 2,700 people. This blog was viewed about 22,000 times in 2013. If it were a concert at Sydney Opera House, it would take about 8 sold-out performances for that many people to see it.

Inventive Blogger Award!

The delightful Morgan of BooknVolume has nominated me for the Inventive Blogger Award! Thank you, my dear!

2. Write a blog post and tell us about the blog(s) you have chosen- there are no minimum or maximum number of blogs required- and ‘present’ the blog(s) with their award.

3. Include in your blog post *FIVE* things that you enjoy about blogging.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So, without further ado, I’m nominating the following blogs for The Inventive Blogger Award:
  • First, there’s Seedbud’s beautiful photographic blog Leaf and Twig. It’s simple, elegant, and full of the loveliest photos.
  • Green-Eyed Geisha features song lyrics, poems, pin-ups, and love letters on LoveMen.org.
  • Steven McCabe of Poem Image has gorgeous poetry and artwork.
And here are five things I enjoy about blogging:
  1. Being somewhat isolated up here on the mountain, I appreciate the online community of friends I’ve made.
  2. Sometimes we send each other care packages. That’s so fun.
  3. I have a forum where I can share life events or bitch about them, as the case may be.
  4. I learn from and laugh and cry with people I’ve never met. It’s both weird and wonderful.
  5. This blog has led to more than one job offer, including a client I’ve had for two years now.
