I found this huge moth in Alpine the other day. It was just sitting there on the pavement in the shade outside a strip mall, not moving. I gently touched it to see if it might react, but it did not. I thought it may have been near the end of its life, but it was still upright and standing on its legs. Gorgeous, fuzzy, and striped, with those amazing antennae and stunning wings.

My bug-expert friends said, “My take is that it is a newly morphed individual because old moth and butterfly wings almost always are damaged. These look pristine.”

And, “Looks like a Ceanothus silk moth (Hyalophora euryalis). They appear on our patio in CW sometimes, also. I would agree – it might have been recently emerged from its pupa. Neat find – not an ‘everyday’ moth!”
