A recent comment thread on CrankyPants’ blog inspired this post. Our pets all have their proper names, the one we give at the vet’s office. But they also have tons of nicknames, too, to the point where I wonder if they get confused. Cisco’s full name is Don Francisco de Altamira, but he’s also frequently addressed as:
- Little Buddy
- Little Dude
- Mr. Wigglebutt
- Puppy
- Puppity
- Bueno Perrito
- Kiddo
- Bubbie
What nicknames do you call your pets?
Ok, I’ll start with one dog…..Orion, O, Mr. Big, BIggybigs, Droolylips, Mr. Bigbutt.
And then there’s Ellie. Ellie Claire, Pups, Crazypants, Miss Pants, Miss Little, Little, Slobberlips, Wigglebutt, Happypants.
Sheldon. Shel, Shellybells, The Bells, The Little Guy, The Good Guy.
Want me to list all five cats? LOL!

I love those! Especially Biggybigs, Droolylips, and Shellybells. And there’s another Wigglebutt! They must be related. 🙂

I call my Urracá: Skrubbe, Skrupsak, Skønpels, Skatpels and Pelsmås.
He loves when I use his real name and comes over if I call his name… all the other things I call him just makes him go mrrp?

LOL, I’d love to hear those pronounced!

I can’t repeat what I call the cats most of the time …
Most of the time, though:
Joy = Baby Girl
Smokey = That Big-Headed Boy
Juliet = Little Miss
Salem = Chubby Kitty (And I’m probably lucky she doesn’t understand what I’m saying)
Jerry = Old Coot

Gracie wants nothing to do with me, so I don’t coo at her very much. But her nicknames are Miss Girl and The Princess.

I call Rocky “Man” a lot, Buddy, Rocky Horrorshow (combo of Rocky Horror Picture Show and A Clockwork Orange’s derivative of the Russian word for “good” which is fitting because he is a good boy. Rock Star, Rockapella, nothing too crazy yet. Elvis had a million nicknames I can’t even think of right now. A lot of them with the word “stink” in it (he was the least stinky dog ever)

I love Rocky Horrorshow! 🙂

Sometimes I call my dog Vocaloid because well, her name is Rin, and she has this habit of howling…more like singing whenever I play the piano or the violin.
As for my hawk Levanon.. I ..think he’s be pretty pissed off if I began calling him anything remotely resembling ‘cute’…

LOL, Cisco is quite the singer, too. I know what you mean.
You have a HAWK?!? That is beyond awesome. I’d love to get into falconry, but I also know it’s an enormous commitment that I’m not prepared for.

Hawks are really tough to care for, especially with their temper and attitude. I remember when I first named my hawk ‘Arawn’, he refused to look at me. I called him ‘Carmillo’ and he decided to snap at me. And then I finally said ‘Levanon’, and he looked at me like he was the proudest thing on earth.

That is HILARIOUS.

My neighbour has had several donkeys over the years…..all named after women with whom he’s had failed relationships. 🙂
