I guess I must have misunderstood when I heard that. Maybe "million-dollar cat" was just a figurative term. (More like "one in a million.") Too bad male calicoes are sterile. It does make sense, though. Thanks, everybody, for the informative lesson!

I have known several orange females, but the extremely rare male calicos are in fact sterile because of the extra sex chromosome. If a calico female (OrangeX, BlackX) breeds with an orange guy (OrangeX, Y), then half their kittens will be orange independent of sex because half of her x-chromosomes carry orange (Girls: oX,oX and boys: oX,Y both orange). - The other half who get her blackX will be black if they are boys (bX,Y) and calico (bX, oX) if they are girls.

That's because a male with black and orange has to have two X chromosomes and a Y (so XXY) -- a rare abnormality (the black and orange are the two forms that particular X-linked gene have). In people XXY usually causes sterility, some breast development, small shoulders, wide hips, etc. And I think those cats are sterile too -- but whether they show "feminized" traits -- kind of hard to tell under all that fur!

But I was thinking the other day that I've never known a female orange or orange and white cat over all these years -- they were always males. And I've known a lot of felines over the years!!
