Yesterday evening we had a thick marine layer blanketing southern California. It’s rare that it gets so high that it makes its way up to our elevation. Mountaintops look like islands. You can see the moisture rolling, swirling, and undulating in slow motion, filling up the valleys and sliding over crests. Just like watching ocean waves crash on rocks, only much slower.

Wow, girl that is massively cool. It looks like you could dive right into it. So many people go for rainbows and puppies, I go for mists and spider webs. Sorry, does that sound goth? LOL
That middle photo could be Avalon. I swear.
To me it looks like you could go walking out across it, or sail a boat on it.
I love that you love that stuff. And you don’t strike me as goth. You just have a dark streak.
Ooh, GREAT comparison! Someone has a home up on that mountaintop, but it’s not really visible. Wouldn’t it have been cool to be up there while the mist surrounded your house on all sides?
Does it feel colder when the fog rolls into your area, or just humid? It is beautiful, and ghostly as well.
Oh, it’s cold, and the humidity just makes it settle into your bones. But I love going out walking in the fog, especially with my wool cape on.
Beautiful….we occasionally have this happen on the elevated tableland which is effectively shaped like a dish and when moist air settles on windless days the fog forms on the following morning leaving only the mountain peaks exposed…..magic….almost as though you’re flying in a plane.
I don’t travel much, but one time I flew from San Diego to Phoenix for my work. Same marine layer was in place, and it was magical flying over the inland “islands.”
Wow, so beautiful! That must have been a treat to see.
It’s mesmerizing.
